Adult Pull Ups and the Management of Incontinence

Bladder health is something that we all need to be aware of, yet two-thirds of individuals through the ages of 30-70 have yet to talk about with their doctors. Incontinence is common for both genders but women tend to be at a greater risk than men do. If you experience any type of incontinence issue, you need to consider using quality products like adult pull ups as they can give you back your dignity as you manage an embarrassing condition.

Incontinence is when a person has involuntary loss of control of the bladder or bowels, which results in urine loss or loss of fecal matter. There are various types of incontinence and each requires different incontinence products to manage them:

• Stress Incontinence
This is where the pelvic sphincter or muscles have been damaged, leading to bladder leaks when it is put under some form of physical stress. Such stress could include coughing, sneezing, laughing or lifting a heavy object. This type of incontinence is more common in women, especially if they have given birth to several children.

• Urge Incontinence
This is where a person experiences an uncontrollable and urgent urge to urinate while at the same time being unable to prevent this release of urine from the bladder. This type of incontinence results from nerve damage that causes brain signals not to be received by the bladder. This could be due to a stroke, multiple sclerosis or mental illness. It is also possible to experience both urge incontinence and stress incontinence, a condition known as mixed incontinence.

• Overflow Incontinence
This is where the brain receives incorrect signals from the bladder as to how full it is. The bladder then fills up and starts to overflow. Causes of this incontinence could be diabetes, pelvic trauma or injury to the spinal cord.

• Incontinence as a Result of Surgery
Patients who undergo certain operations, such as prostate surgery, caesarean sections or hysterectomies may end up suffering from incontinence. This can also be the case after surgery of the lower intestine or of the rectum in trying to treat cancerous growths. This is because the surgery may interfere with the pelvic muscles causing them to weaken. This in turn may cause them not operate properly and to be prone to leaks.

• Functional Incontinence
This type of incontinence is caused by a lack of mobility or mental capacity required to take oneself to a washroom or to go through the process of relieving one self.

• Anal Incontinence
This type of incontinence is also known as fecal or double incontinence and occurs when the nervous system fails. As a result, one’s body is not able to control its bowel movements. This type of incontinence is mainly found among old and frail patients and usually results in both the loss of urine and fecal matter.

Some products for incontinence focus on using light pads that have an absorbent core and can be worn with traditional underwear. Other products may be a bit bigger as they come in the form of a traditional looking diaper and are geared to help people who have greater amounts of urine loss or have a higher frequency of urine loss. Speak to your doctor about your condition as you could have a different health problem that is tied to incontinence. Women often wait almost 7 years before they will even go and talk to their doctor about incontinence. You need to go and talk to them quickly so that you don’t end up having to suffer from this embarrassing condition for longer than you need to. Using adult pull-ups can be a real life-saver for people who have been too embarrassed to leave their home due to incontinence being unpredictable.
